I'm at a site where they're writing new Delphi apps against a grubby old
Foxpro database. This is bad because the Delphi drivers for Foxpro cannot
handle much in the way of queries and performance is abysmal. Apollo was
investigated in an attempt to beef things up, but it suffers from the same
problems and more. What is really needed is an upgrade to a better
database. Using Delphi with Foxpro seems a bit like running Windows 2000
but insisting on sticking to your old DOS-based word processing package.
Unfortunately the big issue is price of site licenses. Ideally we need
something free, but if not, then it has to be extremely cheap (cheapskates,
I know). I've already used paradox and I'd rather use something more robust
(unless it was a choice between that and Foxpro). So what are my options?
What is there available that's inexpensive and yet still does the job well?
