John, what are your reasons for wanting to change?

Personally I use DBISAM (commercial database, non-BDE, supports SQL) for
small applications especially where the distribution also needs to be small.

For larger databases I would go for Interbase 6 - It's open source now. With
Delphi 5 Pro you can use the new IBX components and avoid the BDE.
