I'm going to hazard a guess that the out-of-date tarball is also why I'm seeing
this error, despite having set wal_level, archive_mode and archive_command:
bash-3.00$ bin/psql -c "SELECT pg_start_backup('basebackup');"
ERROR: WAL archiving is not active
HINT: archive_command must be defined before online backups can be made safely.
Sigh, I'll try the download again tomorrow.
