Hi All, Just joined the group last week, so very new to this group and all the discussions here. I'm very new to Data Science as well - have been following the space for a couple of years (mainly through blogs like Radar @ OReilly, Flowing Data etc.) and have just taken the plunge to learn some practical skills through Course-ra's Introduction to Data Science course (its tough - throws you into the deep end of the pool!). My main interest in Data Science is for civic action, to figure out if large data sets (and accompanying mapping) can be used to improve citizen services and equally, if not more important, improve citizen engagement with government services.
