Brian,

This freeware looks perfect. I think it you've nailed it.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I probably wasn't clear enough in stating that my request was for a windows text editor with the ability to capture a rectangle of text from one place in a document [or from a second document] and insert the captured rectangle in the middle of existing text - preserving each line text before the rectangle's text and after it -- that is, no wrapping like most windows text editors do.

In wp51 it was called Move [Alt-F4 to mark and Control-F4 to insert] and you had to choose Rectangle instead of Block to move, delete or copy the highlighted rectangle of text from anywhere and move it to anywhere, preserving the rectangle as a block. Actually, you start marking rectagle some chararacters deep in a line and end some charaters before or at the end of a line during marking to see it work.

This ability is amazingly powerful, especially for grooming large amounts of data in preparation of inserting into DP, so if you haven't before realized text rectangles can be lifted from within text documents and inserted in different places in same or in an existing document, take a look at a copy of your old wpdos or this windows program Brian has recommended. You may want to set up a super wide wp51 page and make the font size 1 to accomodate super long lines. I have found max size is 50 inches by 30 inches for a page -- or maybe 30 by 50, don't recall for sure.

Again, thanks to all.

Hi,

I use the ConTEXT editor, which includes rectangular copy, by holding down the Alt key as you select the text

The editor is free and I have been using it for many years as it has some great features...

Hi,

Probably like many of you, I'm using a DP app I built in the 1992-95 era
-- one that holds all of our case information, calendaring, and contact
information for a 5 attorney law office. It hasn't been modified in 8
or 9 years, and I'm pretty sure I'll still be using it when I retire in
3-5 years. I marvel at its capability and durability almost every day.
For the thousandth time -- THANK YOU LOU!

I ran into a problem today that I wonder if anyone has a quick answer
to. I need the old WP51 rectangle capture and paste ability, but in a
windows text system -- preferably Word, WordPad or NotePad or even WP9,
10, 11.

I'm trying to explain to non-wp51 law users how they can populate a csv
data file by doing what I do effortlessly with WP51, which is block and
move rectangle.

In this case, every line begins almost the same way except for the
numbering as shown below. The task is to move the second data set so it
ends up at the end of each row of the first column.set. With wp51, I
just use alt-f4 to mark and cont-f4 to grab rectangle and then drop it
at end of first line.

My question is can a commonly availble windows program do the same?
