I created a second panel with two fields (a code field and the description
field).

Back in the first panel, for the code field I removed the formula and
created a data link (which works fine). But what I am not clear about is
what formaula I need to enter into the description field of the first
panel. I can penetrate the code field's data link in the first panel.

To create the formula for the Description Field, get into its Field Formula screen. When there, hit F4 and then cursor to the Code Field and hit F5. This will bring you to the second panel. Cursor to the Description Field in the
second panel and hit F4. Now set the update conditions for that formula.
Done.
