LibreOffice, the latest version of OpenOffice, is "compatible" with
Excel, and has the bonus of being free. http://www.libreoffice.org/
If you are dealing with .csv type data, then you might look at CSVed,
another freeware program, that has a lot of nice things. Sorting, filters, etc.
