We used DirectFB with excellent results. As the previous poster pointed out, it all depends on your requirements. For the most part, we needed the ability to manipulate the framebuffer with images and text (no GUI). A word of warning, however - DirectFB is a complex beast aimed at many audiences. I would say that the best thing you can do is read anything and everything about it. Also, DO ask questions on their mailing list (they are VERY helpful to noobs). Overall, I have been very impressed with the folks on the DirectFB mailing list.
