I don't know DM355.
But other DaVinci devices (e.g. DM644x) have a built in BootRom. With
this BootRom they can communicate using a special protocol via UART
with a host (PC) application and download a 2nd stage loader (UBL)
that then is able to write U-Boot.

Most probably something similiar (identical?) is available for DM355,
too. Scan your documentation for "DVFlasher", "BootRom", "RBL" and "UBL".
It seems a waste having to buy CCS only to load the flash with uBoot.
Yes, that's right. For U-Boot only load CCS & JTAG are shouldn't be
necessary.
