Thanks for the ideas.  I had the same thoughts when I first saw the
problem pop up.  I don't think it's a progressive/interlaced problem
though since the data dropping occurs every 3rd line.  Nonetheless, I'll
check into that front one more time just to put it to bed.

It's not much of an idea, but:

The fact it's vertical half screens sounds like something to do with
interlaced/progressive buffer handling. The VPFE and VPBE can both be
configured to deal with frame buffers either way, and I had a few
entertaining days with vertically half-scaled video output etc. when the
progressive/interlaced settings were out. I don't have experience with
LCD output though.
