You are right - I tried unionfs by applying the patches to the 2.6.10
kernel.
The unionfs web site claims that the code is not 100% stable and my
experiments bear this out. I simply left the board running and over the
weekend it silently locked up (no console output). In my case the whole
root filesystem was a union - it may be better if you only union the
area you application resides in for example.
