Hello Jim/John,
V7 client can/will attach to V8 instance; depending on type of monitoring
one would want to run it is available as well. That said; however, I
strongly recommend upgrading to v8 client if you plan to connect to v8
instances only. On the other hand, if you have mix of v6-v8 than you're
somewhat out of luck.
Regards,

Subject: RE: [DB2EUG] V8 restrictions with V7 clients

Hi John

Here are some insights on the limitations
There are a number of limitations when using the v8.1 Runtime Client with v7
or older Instances.

For example, there is no support available for:

Some data types, including LOBs
Some security capabilities, such as changing passwords
Certain connections and communication protocols, including ATTACH
Some application features and tasks, such as:
*         Monitoring

* Utilities that can be initiated by a client to a server

* SQL statements greater than 32 KB in size

The IBM tools that come with DB2 v8 don't work either, since they also are
constrained by the same Runtime Client limitations. The following Version 8
tools, products, and centers support only Version 8 servers:

Control Center
Health Center (including the Web version of this center)
Indoubt Transaction Manager
Information Catalog Center (including the Web version of this center)
Journal
License Center
Satellite Administration Center
Spatial Extender
Task Center
Tools Settings

According to the IBM DB2 v8.1 Release Notes...

"You should migrate all of your servers to version 8 before you migrate any
of your client systems to version 8 in order to avoid these restrictions."

We are in the process of planning our migration to V8. Are there
restrictions of V7 clients connecting to a V8 server. I see in the release
notes and the "Getting Started Guide" there is no support for things like V8
clients accessing V7 servers with LOB data. An IBM person had mentioned
similar restrictions on LOB support for V7 clients and V8 servers, but I
can't find any reference to any kind of limits.

It would certainly make our migration more reasonable if we could update the
clients later and just concentrate on the server first.

Thanks,
John
