Unfortunately you are expecting a behavior that is specifically not guranteed.
By definition the field is an identity - the only means unique, not sequencial -
auto_increment also specifically means it increments each time it is used, not
as a count of the number of records in your table.
You can use SEQUENCES directly if you require, ah, sequences - please ask about
this on any of the support sites. http://user.services.openoffice.org being one
