A couple others have sent you solutions for your date issue.  I tend to
prefer the ALTER SESSION method for selects and TO_DATE() for WHERE clauses.

'DD-MON-YY' is the default date format in the database, not Perl.
DBD::Oracle and DBI just pass through the string value the database
retrieves for dates.
