What is happening for error:end-of-file on communication channel

I'm counting following problem many times.

Error msg : |ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication
channel (DBD ERROR: OCIStmtExecute).

It is happened when i am updating database with 
above ten thouands of records ,while my program 
has not finished yet.

Oracle: 8.1.7
DBI   : 1.14
