Can you get mysql to work with its client tools, no dbi involved?
Can you get dbi to work without mysql, dbd::csv?
Does the version of perl you are using work with the version of dbi&dbd that
you are using?
have you considered freebsd, ports makes this stuff very easy?

ps I do not hate linux I just think freebsd works much better for servers,
boxes with solid hardware.
