Installation question

I'm trying to install DBD-mysql as 'root' and I'm having a problem w/ the 'make test'. 
 The testing files aren't able to connect to the database.  The testing script reports 
that it's trying to connect as root and password: NO (that combination won't work on 
my db server, which is up & running, btw), despite me giving it other parameters in 
the 'perl Makefile.PL --testuser=purdy --testpassword=password'.

Any ideas?
