Actually, I tried entering the data from the mysql client that installs 
with the mysql server.
Then, there is no padding. So when I retreive the data, I get only the 
data that I entered
manually, and no spaces padded. Also previously I have used mysql 
varchar fields with PHP,
and that data is also without spaces. This makes me think that the 
problem is probably
something to do with dbi (or the dbd:mysql driver).
