I have developed a number of projects here that are 100% Perl.
The biggest is an extensible SNMP network management system.

I have had trouble with my management. The primary problem is:
"How can we sell this product for tens of thousands of dollars
when we give them the source code."

My rebuttal is: "Our customers are in the business of X, not
stealing and reselling management systems!"

Why Perl? as opposed to C, Java, C++? FAST development time!
I just can't beat it in any of the other languages. (Thats based on my
over 25 years experience as a 'professional' programmer.)

As for "advantages of knowing perl career-wise". I think its a
great thing. It gives you a _good_ alternate view into problem
solving. The downside is that others will hate you for being
a rebel, and for being able to solve problems an order of magnitude
faster than they can with a whole lot fewer bugs (memory allocation
and buffer overflow bugs, just to name a few).

Perl has been my 'primary' tool now for almost 3 years (solid).
