To all: I am trying to connect to a remote Oracle server via DBD::Oracle from a Red Hat 7.1 server and am having great difficulty getting the Oracle Client and/or the DBD::Oracle module to install. (We are in the process of migrating from a Windows NT server to Red Hat 7.1 and this is the last hurdle for me to jump. We do not have (nor want to have) Oracle installed; we would rather use something like SQLNet which was very easy to install on the NT machine.)
I have been told here and elsewhere that I need to 1) download the "entire" Oracle installation; and 2) only install the Client portion. I first downloaded 3 gigantic Oracle9i files for Linux from Oracle.com. When I finally got to the point of running the Installer, it did finish successfully but said it had a couple problems because it could not find about 9 library files which were supposed to be in the installation directories. Since I got the "Successfully Installed" message I tried installing DBD::Oracle: would not install without "force". (And yes I did successfully install DBI.) After a few responses to my questions, I was advised to try Oracle8i because "I've never tried Oracle9 and I know 8 works." Now I'm trying to install Oracle8i and the installer will not come up: the whole thing hangs at the shell prompt with the process running in the background. I thought I understood that the Oracle Installer gui would come up but it doesn't. Question 1: Is there an easier way to do this?? Question 2: Can anybody give me some advice on getting Oracle to install correctly?? Thanks, Phil 818-393-4267
