Dave,

The bundled Perl is compiled with Sun's cc compiler.  You will need to 
use that to compile and DBI / DBD modules.

The recommended action (mentioned elsewhere in this mailing list and on 
www.sunfreeware.com) is to install the Perl 5.6.1 package from 
sunfreeware (which uses gcc 2.95.x _and_ tells you what options were 
used) into /usr/local/bin (bundled Perl is in /usr/bin), make that the 
main Perl and start DBI / DBD installation all over again :-))
