Re dbiproxy to DB2 AS/400 from linux on net

We're trying to connect the back end of an online catalog
to an instance of DB2 running behind a firewall on an AS/400.

We've got a VPN running, we have dbiproxy working.

A. catalog site w/dbiproxy (linux) <--> VPN (freeswan) <--> B. dmz machine (linux)
<--> C. AS/400

A. to B. works.  (Naturally, it't perl).

What I don't seem to understand is how to make the last step.
I assumed it would be a vanilla DBI connection between B and C, but it
seems it might have to be a DB2 to DB2 connection instead? (Our testbed
has C as another linux box, not the real AS/400).

It's starting to look like we need DB2 on machine A and B. Do
we need Connect version on B? What's that, two more licenses
and two different additional environments to maintain? yeech.
I've got to be making this harder than it needs to be. Can
anyone steer me right please?

Thanks.

This is all on debian (unstable) linux, IBM db2 V7.2, all current.
