Unfortunately I have no discretion in either matter...................... I have to take what's installed as far as the basic perl installation and the c compiler go. However, I got everything working by copy a working (I hope) DBI.so from another similar server. Mark.

FWIW, I'm running xlC v4 and it works, so you may be on to something. More specifically, if you didn't build perl yourself, then building modules using a different compiler than was used to build perl may lead to problems. -- j.
