*** This looks like the problem.  Your per was built to not allow dynamic
loading.  You should build your own perl from the Perl source and then add
any modules you need.

I don't know why any Linux perl wouldn't be built to allow dynamic loading,
so you may want to check whoever gave you the perl to find out what their
intention was.
