Marc, This is a common problem on Solaris - to the extent that there is a FAQ on it. Solaris 2.8 comes with perl installed BUT it's built with Sun's c copmpiler _and_ its an old version.
Best route forward is to install perl 5.6.1 (it won't clash with the installed perl), gcc 2.95.(3?) (not 3.x.x anyway) and then build DBI. Look at www.sunfreewware.com for a sun package of both perl and gcc.
