I actually think this is the best possible answer for first time mistakes.
It acknowledges his status as a beginner by providing information about the list, and then provides him a reference to the documentation as a convenience. Since an "off-topic" reply was going to be transfered to the sender ANYWAY, it servers no purpose to intentionally hide the place he should go to to find the answer from him. It's not as if he is explaining in detail how to do what the guy wants, just where to find information about what he wants.
