Though some on this list might view this as being off-topic, truly, I
believe it relates, and I would like to read some perspectives from other
data managers:

I am in the process of updating an antiquated database, based on a
taxonomy. I have received the newer version of the taxonomy upon
which I am to update the database fields. In the process of updating
the taxonomy, the creators have added separators (i.e., what once read
BH30018018 now reads BH-300-180.18)

Naturally, to update the database, either I have to "split" the old
database field into sections and add the new punctuation, or I have to
"split" the new database field into sections to remove the punctuation.
Yes, it seems like six of one, a half dozen of another, neither here nor
there.

This is what is causing me the dilemna. I have tried weighing both
sides of what to do. Since they seem equal, I am spending far too
much time deliberating instead of acting. Therefore, I thought some
other input would weigh my decision.

To eliminate any gripes concerning just how off-topic this may seem to
the list, I would appreciate any comments to be sent directly to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] If there is interest in reading the results,
send me your email addy, and I will send you a compiled copy of results
after receiving them.

Thank you in advance.
