You might try first building gcc.

The tradeoff here is free -- where you typically have to built it
yourself -- versus paying someone like Microsoft.  There's a place
for both in this large world IMO.  For what it's worth, I use both
open source and bought software and the support I get from open 
source is always better and faster.  But open source is not for everyone.
