Sorry all... I got the problem straitened out. On the one machine that really matters to me... the tnsnames has been corrupted and part of it (including the entry i need is missing). This hasn't solved the mystery on what's going wrong on some of the other machines... but I won't bother any of you with that. Thanks for all your help.

What is the value of $ENV{ORACLE_HOME} inside your script? tnsnames.ora should be at "$ENV{ORACLE_HOME}/network/admin/tnsnames.ora". Ronald
