Alex,

To confirm versions:
        5.6.1 w/DBD::ODBC 1.02 succeeds.
        5.8   w/DBD::ODBC 1.01 fails.

I suggest that you
        a) ensure your versions of DBI are the same
        b) try 5.8 with DBD::ODBC 1.02 (to be the same as 5.6.1 (or
5.6.1 with 1.01)

I suspect:
        a) 5.8's new threading and interaction with DBI & DBD::ODBC
        b) 5.8

I also suggest that you post this to the ActiveState sites.
