Thanks to everyone who responded.

The oracle tools for this are indeed expensive and require "enterprise"
versions of both databases as well as extra cost for DataGuard . Unless I
was a bank then this would be unreasonable expense for the benifits.

The standard oracle tools allow an offline standby database or shipping and
application of redo logs however I do not think  that I can apply redo logs
in semi-realtime (or without disrupting exisitng transactions or the slave
instance). This is something I really need to test.

It looks like DBD::Multiplex will do exactly what I want it to. I will need
to look into error handling and maybe dropping connections from the "pool"
if I experience errors with them.

Perl to the rescue again :)
