Mostly a lot of error checking.  The contents of $DBI::errstr might be
interesting.  The output from DBI->trace(4) may also shed some light on
what is happening.  Search http://search.cpan.org/dist/DBI/DBI.pm for
'errstr' and 'trace' for more information and examples.

I hope you have included 'use strict;' somewhere and '-w' in the #!
line.
