Well - you need the client software (or some client software). This means either installing ASA on the client machine (note - I really don't know ASA, so I'm not familiar with its structure), or installing the Sybase client software (OpenClient) or even installing FreeTDS. If you're on linux you can use the free OpenClient version for linux (at http://linux.sybase.com) and DBD::Sybase, for example.
