I know this is off-topic, but am hoping one of you who
knows MySQL well will be able to answer this quickly,
as I haven't been able to find the answer in books or
 on the internet.

Is there a mysql command that I can issue at the 'mysql>'
client prompt that will tell me the hostname of the
machine on which the MySQL database (server) is running?

'status', it provides more than you requested don't know if there is a way to limit it. See the 'Connection' property...

Actually, the answer is "no". "Connection" in the status message may indicate a value that, while correct, is not useful as a host name. (Try connecting over a named pipe to Windows server and check the status message, for example.)
