I am experiencing the same thing, (I am just using a home grown tool
to execute arbitrary SQL from Vim and output to a new window).

I've tried setting RaiseError to 0 before the $sth->{NUM_OF_FIELDS}, and
putting the $sth->{NUM_OF_FIELDS} in an eval, and both, but it dies no
matter
what I've tried with:
Describe failed during DBI::st=HASH(0x1999248)->FETCH(NUM_OF_FIELDS) at
...

Actually the two other databases I've tried return '0E0'.
