Jim,

I'm not the OP but I am familiar with the nomenclature.  RedHat Enterprise 
Linux derived distros (Centos/Scientific Linux most notably) mark the rpm 
install files as el5, el6 and
and el7 to designate the release family;

el5 = RHEL5, el6=RHEL6 etc
