I've had heretics tell me that, if I don't speak in tongues, it means I'm
not saved. So I told him, "What about a deaf mute? He doesn't speak at all."

No way. Don't let these show-offs trip you up. God never moved me to
"speak in tongues," though God did give me the desire to actually learn
foreign
languages, the hard way.

I would agree with you and just recently I heard an area pastor on the radio
explain that part of Acts that same way which was comforting to me
personally.

In the book of Acts, "speaking in tongues" referred to a sudden, miraculous
ability to speak a foreign language. Or it was also the disciples speaking
Hebrew, while foreigners heard it in their language.
Until the New Testament was completed, it was necessary for preachers to
get some help from God, or from other Christians, to be understood. However,
by the time the Apostle John had written the last book of the Bible
(Revelation), there were enough preachers for every language, so God withdrew
this
"tongues" gift.
Today, people do not have the gift of tongues. It was strictly for the
Jews. It will not be used again until after the Rapture, when Israel will
have 144,000 evangelists preaching the Gospel.
