Thursday September 25, 2008 IN THE THUNDER
"God is so great that we cannot begin to know him. No one can begin to understand eternity. . . We feel his presence in the thunder. Even the cattle know when a storm is coming." Job 36:26-33 The majority of the people in the Old Testament had no power to really know God. The Holy Spirit was granted to only a select few. God trusted only the prophets to teach people who He was and how He worked. Yet, like us - few learned. Today, we are given a light into who God really is. Time and time again Jesus proclaimed to the people that having seen Him, they had seen the Father. In John 10:30 Jesus says, "I and the Father are one." What can we learn by looking at the life of Jesus? We learn that just like today's scripture says: "We feel his presence in the thunder." Yet, it isn't used in the same connotation as in the Old Testament, where thunder meant destruction. Everywhere Jesus went people were healed. When we are in the presence of Jehovah we truly find healing for our emotional pain. People could not remain sick, blind, or even dead in His presence. When a Christian dies, he/she lives again - in His presence. As Christians we have the blessed assurance that God is with us in the thunder. In the times of distress and sorrow, God is in our midst. When we are still before Him, when we search our hearts and confess our doubts and frustrations, He soothes us and comforts us. On the other hand, when we are out of line, His Word convicts and instructs us. Hebrews 4:12, says, "For whatever God says to us is full of living power: it is sharper than the sharpest dagger, cutting swift and deep into our innermost thoughts and desires with all their parts, exposing us for what we really are." When we are in the storm we have the opportunity to turn to God through Jesus Christ. In Luke 18:1, we are reminded, "One day Jesus told his disciples a story to illustrate their need for constant prayer and to show them that they must keep praying until the answer comes." It is true. We are to keep the lines of communication open between the Father and us. When we do, we will find ourselves praising Him, even through the thunder. ******************************************* O.
