Basically the build.sh script is deprecated.
Use:

I tried that out of interest, and yes it works a treat *except* you no
longer get the man pages installed anywhere. Can the Makefile be updated to
include a couple of rules to copy the man pages to the path specified by
--mandir= ?
Sounds like a valid bug to me. But the new docs in 2.0 say you should
use install-dbmail.sh which is totally bogus since anyone with any unix
experience would want to run make install.
Also, the install script bypasses a critical security issue: IMO,
dbmail-smtp should be installed suid 'dbmail', and the config file
should be chowned to the dbmail user with mode 0600. If you don't set
the mode on the config file correctly any luser will be able to read
your dbmail database parameters, giving them full access to your email
storage.
Is there any sense then in perhaps releasing a 1.2.7 in which all this
deprecated stuff is removed (especially from the docs!) so as not to confuse
other newbies like me? :-) Things that need removing are the build scripts
and references to dbmail-config (present in dbmail.conf).
Well, we're working on getting 2.0 out, but other than that I couldn't
agree more. The INSTALL file in 1.2 should have been fixed some time ago
already. Esp the references to dbmail-config are totally archaic. That
tool disappeared even before the 1.0 release.
