Hi Louis: I hunch your box is an SECC2 866; more stability and horsepower than numbers suggest.
Years ago I ran DbMail V1.2 on a pair of SECC 450s; 300 or so accounts, mostly POP3 then. It disqualified for a software update but a pair of 1000s handle its evoved IMAP work without a sneeze. Sounds like you have a nimble setup which (trimmed Debian Sarge kernel) should leave your resources for your mail applications. If you start getting into SpamAssassin and such it might be an idea to pipe the filtering to another box. I find with the new postfix, though, you can reject most of the junk on the front end and apart from the very careless users you can get away without Spam and virus filtering using Postfix various_access, body_check and header_check hashes to simply reject the trash. Paul's note on LDAP is important to you. It's a coming thing. Your choice of OS's may be right on the mark to be an early adopter if you have the time. I believe there is a lot of Debian experience on this list. best...
