Tom,
As I understand this;
lmtp is for purely network centric delivery. dbmail-smtp is a misnomer for pipe
delivery. So the differences are between a network socket and a unix pipe.
This means you can use several different smtp frontends which all share the same
lmtp process for central delivery.

I looked through the list archives and could not find a decent thread
comparing dbmail-lmtp vs. dbmail-smtp. I was wondering if the list could
explain the pros and cons of each and possibly recommend one over the other.
Once all is set up, we will be using postfix/clamav/dbmail/spamassasin load
balanced across 6 servers. There are 2 separate MySQL servers for the
storage.
We are currently supplying email for aproximatel 10,000 accounts.
I like those numbers. Will you be handling imap as well? If so, please keep
close tabs on your performance.
So, would dbmail-lmtp or dbmail-smtp be better for this application?
With lmtp you'd need only two servers handling dbmail delivery for those 6 smtp
frontends. One for each storage machine.
