It is more configurable. It's vastly more difficult to configure, but it's more configurable. Most of the things you can do with sendmail that you can't with Postfix will break various RFCs. It was sometimes required in the old, dark days of peculiar gateways to UUCP, Bitnet and what not. It's not required today.

These days, Postfix is clearly the better choice.
