I just asked a similar question the other day. It seems the consensus
is that the 2.1 branch is now fairly stable, and will only be accepting
bug fixes towards the stable 2.2 release, no new major features.
There have been a number of fixed already put in place since 2.1.6 so
you might want to compile from SVN HEAD.
