DBMail enthusiasts, While searching for ways to improve Mutt's speed at opening large mailboxes I came across DBMail. I think DBMail might fit my needs but thought it best to post here, describe my current setup and what I hope to accomplish.
First - this won't be a production server type environment. I would be running it on a personal Linux box. I'm currently running Gentoo Linux but am considering switching to SourceMage linux. Looks like neither distribution has a DBMail package. But, compiling from source doesn't bother me. I've never had any luck creating Gentoo ebuilds but have created a couple of SourceMage spells. So, if I end up using DBMail I'll probably submit a spell for DBMail. In my current setup I use fetchmail to retrieve mail from my ISP's mail server and also from the mail servers of the two domains in my sig line. I run fetchmail as the regular user that I use to read mail. Fetchmail hands the mail it retrieves off to postfix which in turn hands it off to procmail for sorting into my various mail folders(maildir format). I'm on several high-volume e-mail lists. The above setup works well except for the case of large mail folders which Mutt can take a while to open/thread. I'm a bit of a pack rat when it comes to mail. I tend to save everything. I occasionally move older messages to archive folders to try to improve performance. All total I have just under 5GB worth of mail at the moment. The only piece of the above puzzle I'm not willing to give up is Mutt. I frequently read mail via SSH. How does one use Mutt to read mail stored in a DBMail database? From what I've seen so far I'm guessing it's done via DBMail's IMAP server. Does DBMail fit my needs? Can I achieve the same functionality(with improved speed) as described above with DBMail? If so, any pointers to docs relating to converting a setup similar to the one described above to DBMail and importing my existing mail into DBMail would be appreciated. I already have both PostgreSQL and MySQL(not to mention Ingres, SQLite, and perhaps a few others I've forgotten about) installed on my box. Yes, I'm a bit of a database junkie. I prefer PostgreSQL over MySQL. Kevin http://www.RawFedDogs.net http://www.WacoAgilityGroup.org Bruceville, TX Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes.
