I've written a php version of dbmail-export and use it currently to
dump mailboxes that haven't been checked in 6mo which usually
compress down very nicely. Then I can dump their mail from the
database hence making the backups faster, db smaller, etc.

I'm still planning my upgrade to 2.2 because the bytea conversion
will be a killer on my 30G db. I hope that there will be a lot more
love associated to the dbmail-export script and once I do the
upgrade I'd be happy to help.

Giving dbmail-import and dbmail-export some more love is definitely on my
todo list. For long term archives I think mbox is the one true format.
Import and export from Microsoft's PST format would be awesome, too. I've
heard that it has a very bizarre format, though.
