But dbmail wouldn't like 6GB messages except on machines with a *lot* of
ram. There's a lot of in-memory copying going on. I've been testing with
1GB messages a while back on a 1GB machine and it wasn't pretty. I
removed the most blatantly redundant copying at the time, and it helped,
but zero-copy we aint;

There should absolutely be a configurable max message size.

A 6GB attachment is *totally* unrealistic for *any* email system to be expected to handle.

First - determine what the maximum *realistic* size of a message that DBMail can handle, based on certain cofigurations (ie, PostgreSQL may be able to handle larger messages than MySQL, or vice-versa)... then *hard-code* in that max size, and make a configuration parameter available that admins can set to make their max size *lower*, but not *larger*.
