If anything, it be great to have the option to setup a separate logging database. That way log writes would not interfere with the mail server's main responsibility and we could direct the logs directly to a log server. Some have dedicated syslog servers, why not add a mysql/postgresql instance there. Centralized logging out of the box!
Of course, if this data would be in the main maillog, then syslog could send it to the central syslog server anyway. Though this would not address the performance issue.
