Setting up dbmailadministrator:
http://dbma.mobrien.com/DBMA/dbmail_sql_help.htm
Setting up DBMail: http://www.dbmail.org

That site looks pretty straight-foward, anyone w/ some Linux
experience could configure the application. It does not appear to
require its scripts to be run out of a cgi-bin; not sure where you
found that tidbit.

"the docs don't tell me if I should be running the pop3d
or the imapd, should I only run the lmtpd? then? If I should only
be running the lmtpd, then what are the pop3d and imapd
daemons for? That's not documented either."

What daemons you run is completely up to you.

DBMail uses a 3rd party MTA (postfix / sendmail) to send / receive
email (port 25).

LMTP = One option for transferring mail between the MTA and the DBMail
system. You would not need to port forward this on your firewall
because for security reasons, it should be bound to 127.0.0.1.

POP / IMAP = Protocols by which your users will access thier email.
Whichever one you use is completely up to you.

All of the information you want is available in the documentation for
each piece of software and is not difficult to read and understand.
