I know when I was running sound for concerts and making tapes, we sometimes used the mixing board's auxiliary sends to make tapes. You use the aux sends to send sounds to effects units such as a reverb or compressor/limiter, or to a tape deck. So, perhaps they had enough aux sends to send two channels to a tape deck during the acoustic sets, but only one send available for the electric sets (since more channels were being processed) and so had to make a mono tape. Another possibility is the tape is a direct feed from the house mix rather than a separate aux mix, and they ran a stereo house mix for the acoustic sets but for volume or aesthetic reasons ran it in mono for the electric sets, and the tapes reflect this. These are just theories -- since I have no specific knowledge of the mixing consoles or outboard effects the band was using for the Alfred/Harpur College shows, I don't know which (if either) was the case. I imagine Healy or Bear would know their usual setup from the early 70's, but I don't know how to contact them. - jfw
