Hi David,

When I started exploring Linux based options, I faced the same problem as you. 
Most Linux distros including Debian can only be installed either with a 
hardware synthesizer, or with the help of a Braille display.

One option that I particularly like is to debootstrap Debian from another 
distro called GRML.
GRML can be installed using a software synthesizer.

You can get GRML from here.
